Born on April 15, 1966, Noel Attard (aka nattardo), was first introduced to the art scene by his father, himself a practicing artist. He was thus brought up in an artistic environment he yearned to live up to. After attending various art schools and studying under various renowned Maltese and foreign artists, Noel sought to compliment his practical side with theoretical academic studies. He graduated in History of Art in 2006 and consequently attained a Masters Degree in Fine Arts in 2016 both from the University of Malta.
Throughout his artistic journey, Noel navigated through various phases in his art. He strongly feels that texture and colour are the main elements through which he seeks to communicate his conceptual art, irrespective of the artwork he is executing. Through these elements, the onlooker is guided towards a deeper understanding of Attard’s work. The texture in his paintings is rich, with heavy impasto layers of subtle colours, enhanced sometimes by the use of surgical gauze, bondo, glues, metal, gypsum, sand, clay resins, wood, aerosol spraying techniques and textile to create different surface qualities in relation to the artistic expression. For the past years, Attard also produced work in ink. Although texture and colour are limited in his inks, he keeps his elements in focus making out of line, form and shape his new artistic vocabulary. Noel has also ventured into the art of sculpture achieving distinguishable results in monumental public art and installation art. His most important metal sculpture to date: ‘It-Taraġ’, which was temporary exhibited at the Valletta City Gate few years ago is now located next to Bighi in Kalkara, Malta. The artist also executed a dual sculptural installation, entitled, Tree of Knowledge and Tree of Life, for the new project at the Millennium Chapel, Paceville, 2018, a project by Prof. Richard England.
The artist is also very much inspired by what he reads - philosophy, phycology, theology, politics and science, all of which feature in his artworks. Music and everyday life experiences were and still are of great inspiration, the latter being an important factor in the exhibition being proposed. In fact, one has to delve deep into his artworks to grasp what he is telling us. Reading the title is sometimes not enough and this is what the artist is constantly after – conveying a message to the individual.
